Traveling as a family or group? A 7 seat SUV covers both the space and the clearance.

Tips

Before you go

  • Book your gorilla permit first

Gorilla trekking needs a permit from the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), booked in advance. Permits are very expensive, so check RDB for the current price before you plan the rest of the trip.

  • Stay in Musanze the night before

Trekking starts early in the morning at the park HQ in Kinigi. Driving up the day before and staying in Musanze avoids a pre dawn drive from Kigali.

  • Plan around Umuganda

Umuganda, the national community work day, is the last Saturday of each month, roughly 7 to 11 am. Most services close and driving is restricted, so don't plan to set off then.

  • Watch your speed

Speed limits are low and camera enforced, often 40 km/h in towns and 60 to 80 km/h outside them. Fines arrive quickly.
